The
Department of Transportation has some extensive projects planned
for the Newark area:
I-95
Toll Plaza (with no plans for re-routing traffic through
Newark):
DelDot is building two highway speed E-Z Pass lanes in each
direction through the Newark Toll plaza. No re-routing of
traffic is planned through Newark as the lanes will be open
during construction. There will be congestion and potential
diversion during various phases of the work. DelDOT completed
minor left turn lane improvements at Old Baltimore Pike, Route
4 and 896 and Ott’s Chapel Road/Elkton Road intersections.
Construction began April 2010, with substantial completion
due by August 2011.
Kirkwood
Highway onto Possum Park Road: This
is a safety project that extends the left turn lane for traffic
turning from Kirkwood Highway onto Possum Park Road. Improvements
will also include new pedestrian islands, cross walks and
sidewalks to bus stops on westbound Kirkwood Highway. DelDot
anticipates starting utility relocation and subsequent roadway
construction in the spring 2011.
Possum
Park Road and Old Possum Park Road: Proposed improvements
include relocating the intersection of Old Possum Park Road
and Possum Park Road approximately 600 feet east of St Regis
Drive and constructing a left turn lane on Possum Park Road
for St Regis Drive. Construction is anticipated to being in
fall 2011. Many residents of Chapel Hill/West Meadow have
been concerned about this intersection for years so we hope
this will begin to address the problem.
Elkton
Road from Casho Mill Road to Delaware Avenue: The
project includes pavement reconstruction, safety and operational
improvements, and improvements to both pedestrian and bicycle
facilities. DelDOT expects construction will be substantially
complete by the end of 2012.
Elkton
Road from the Maryland State Line to Casho Mill Road: The
project included pavement rehabilitation and adding an additional
lane each way on Elkton Road. The design of the project is
currently on hold because of the pavement overlay that occurred
within the past two years which should last for the next few
years; therefore, no money is currently programmed for right
of way or construction in the current 6 year Community Transportation
Plan. DelDOT continues to assess the current pavement condition
to determine when the design should be restarted.
23rd
District Improvements: Each member of the General
Assembly is allocated money from the Bond Bill for the Community
Transportation Funds to be used for road improvements such
as repaving and curb replacements, sidewalks, and community
signs. Each legislator received $185,000 for Fiscal Year 2011.
