Legislators
fund W. Main st. ornamental traffic signal poles
Representative
Terry Schooley and Senator Liane Sorenson have agreed to use funds
from their respective Community Transportation Fund accounts to
install four ornamental traffic signal poles at the intersection
of West Main Street and Hillside Road in Newark. The new poles
are part of Delaware Department of Transportation’s repaving
of Main Street this summer.
“DelDOT
originally proposed standard silver poles, which residents felt
were out of character with the surrounding neighborhood. Rep.
Schooley and I agreed,” said Sorenson. “After studying
different options, we thought these black ornamental poles will
be in keeping with the historic nature of West Main Street, which
is the site of some of the oldest homes in the City.”
“The
current configuration of wires and poles does not comply with code,
and will lose its ‘grandfathered’ status because a utility
pole must be removed as part of the repaving,” added Schooley. “These
ornamental poles are appropriate at an intersection which is one
of the gateways to downtown Newark.”
The
poles should be installed this fall.
